In and Around Lagos
In and Around Lagos

This section is all about the noteworthy, yet not well known until now, things that the people in the community are doing. Here we examine things like extraordinary hobies, unknown talents, interesting phenomena and all and sundry.

Yes, we are showcasing the little gems of special interest; things that have until now, eluded general public awareness and interest.

No, we are not looking for "sensation"!

Our mission is to present to the world that "Day in the life of the Lagos community" and we invite you to explore this with us. So if you know of any thing that could be applicable, let us know - we will find a way to unlock such a treasure and share it here with the world.

We are proud of our city and of the Algarve and this is part our giving back to the community.

During the past year we have walked the town and its "freguesias" (county's) ... we have met with a myriad of people, covering most nationalities as well as economic dispensation. It has been an enlightening experience.

During 2011 we will be sharing with you our past experiences as well as new ones as we progress with our walk-about.

I am now going to share some of the gems that we have found:
You can start your journey about Lagos, by walking the streets inside the old city walls. Inside the old city walls you will find hundreds of little shops, many restaurants and many places of interest.

If you enjoy old architecture and interesting ironwork, look out for details on windows, verandas and old doors. Some of the workmanship is just stunning.
Lagos lies at the mouth of the river Bensafrim and the riverfront road is named the Avenida dos Descobrimentos (or Avenue of the Discoveries), a reference to the town’s close connections with and involvement in Portugal’s legendary sea explorations of the New World.

At the western end of the Avenida, opposite the Fort, stands a statue of Henry the Navigator, and in the garden opposite, you will find the City Emblem.
One of the most spectacular and most photographed beaches on the Algarve coast is Lagos’ Praia Dona Ana. Praia da Dona Ana is approximately 1.5km from the town centre and can be reached by a spectacular cliff top walk via Praia do Pinhao.

Leaving the Avenida in a westerly direction, walk to the top of the hill leading out of town; at the top of the hill, you’ll see the Bombeiros (fire station ) on the right and, immediately on your left, a small side street that has an Indian restaurant on the corner and two holiday accommodation places.

A sign post indicates the pathway to Praia do Pinhao.
Porto de Mos and Praia da Luz

Beyond Ponta da Piedade lies the secluded beach of Porto de Mos which can be accessed by way of a footpath to the inland side of the lighthouse at Ponta da Piedade. Although the Porto de Mos area is undergoing some development, this little beach still offers peace and seclusion to those who seek it.

Antonio’s beach bar & restaurant provides an excellent view whilst dining and is also your last watering hole should you undertake the spectacular cliff walk to Praia da Luz, the neighbouring county.
