Any entrepreneur should read this article before plunging into rental agreements in Lagos.

In talking to some local business owners in Lagos, we were shocked when we learnt what some of the landlords and rental agencies are charging for premises that could be used for shops, restaurants and other retail outlets in Lagos.

Are you part of the Problem?

Are you Part of the Solution?

As we have walked the town and chatted to many of you that have businesses in Lagos about the value of participating in the I Support Lagos marketing and branding program.

We realised that there is a lack of understanding and much confusion about what is marketing and what is advertising; when do you use an advertising strategy versus a marketing one; and what are the various components of both.
Shopping Malls started to appear during the 60’s in many parts of the USA, and they soon became a well-established trend worldwide, with shoppers flocking to its air-conditioned spaces.

Today, most businesspeople have a presence on the Internet, but many are unaware of the risks associated with having such a presence.

I want to share with you a very serious business risk that we have identified during our visits to small and not so small businesses in Lagos. The one that really prompted me to write this article is the following:

Over the past 12-months I have been observing the marketing, branding and advertising strategies used by many small business owners within the Lagos community, and I could not miss many of the errors committed by them.

Market-based activities are now recognised by governments, business and development agencies round the world as potential solutions to major sustainable development challenges – reducing poverty, enhancing livelihoods, ensuring community sustainability, protecting ecosystems, tackling climate change, as well as meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

Increasingly, the private sector is recognising an emerging business opportunity in designing or modifying business models specifically to address such issues. But to date this evolution has been slow, patchy and ad-hoc. And although many innovative pilot initiatives in the past have succeeded at a micro-level they have failed to achieve success at scaling-up.
