Visiting Praia da Dona Ana

One of the most spectacular and most photographed beaches on the Algarve coast is Lagos’ Praia Dona Ana. Praia da Dona Ana is approximately 1.5km from the town centre and can be reached by a spectacular cliff top walk via Praia do Pinhao.

Leaving the Avenida in a westerly direction, walk to the top of the hill leading out of town; at the top of the hill, you’ll see the Bombeiros (fire station ) on the right and, immediately on your left, a small side street that has an Indian restaurant on the corner and two holiday accommodation places.

A sign post indicates the pathway to Praia do Pinhao.

Following this path, will indeed lead you first to the small, but truly beautiful beach that is the Praia do Pinhao. This beach links to another one, being the Praia dos Estudantes.

But we advise you to follow the cliff top route for 15/30 more minutes (take great care as the cliffs are subject to severe erosion) you will arrive at the breathtaking beach of Dona Ana with its amazing rock formations.

Spend some time at one of the cafes or, should you wish to absorb more of the beauty of the coastline, turn uphill, past the old Hotel Golfinho building and make a left turn at the junction; you can then either follow the roadway or the cliff top for twenty minutes and arrive at Ponte da Piedade, an amazing rocky formation that’s sure to take your breath away.

Again, there is a cafe to provide much needed refreshment and, if that’s enough walking for one day, a stop for the tourist train which will return you effortlessly back to town (the tourist train only runs some months of the year, make sure that it is running when you take this walk).

This trip from town will take about 2 hours.
